It is fairly common to hear players say "I tend to almost fall over when I swing, especially during the follow - up. I feel like I have to step left in order not to fall over."
This fault should be addressed by looking at the stance, set - up, the downswing and the finish. Usually it is the finish that makes you unbalanced, so let's concentrate on this here and now. It is self evident if you are not in balance, you will tend to have bad shots, simply because your body is fighting to both keep your balance and to hit the ball correctly.
Luckily there is a very simple exercise you can do to get a good balance.
It goes like this.
First get a mid range club, a 6 iron for example, and set up as you normally do. Then raise the club and assume the finish position.
Hold the position and mentally go through the following points:
* Is your posture good? You should be standing more on your left side assuming you are right handed, otherwise it is the right leg), with the left leg supporting more of your weight.
* The belt buckle should point to the target, it's ok to be slightly to the left of it. * Your chest should also be pointing to the target, or as before to the left of it.
* Check that your right heel is turned up, that your toe is "digging in" to the ground and all your spikes can be seen. It is easy if have a buddy look at your feet.
* The right shoulder will be lower than the left, and the club should have gone through the swing, around your head, so to speak, and the club should be pointing downwards. The face of the club should be to the right, facing forward-downwards.
Keep this stance for a few seconds, this starts "programming" your muscles and your brain to what a good follow up feels like.A correct follow-up will make it easier to get the perfect golf swing!
When you can find this position easily and without thinking about it, then the next step is to start doing swings and end up in this position.
The point of doing this drill is to "rewire" you, so when you start the golf swing you will automatically finish like this - if you don't it'll feel strange and you will realise it is not right.
